2:30-2:50  |  Are we there yet? Location Services for Advertisers and Brands

Tina Unterlaender, Account Director, AKQA Mobile

Location aware applications have been the once and future king of advertising for the past 10 years or so. In spite of the early adopter popularity of location-centric apps such as Foursquare, Gowalla, and Loopt, location based services still have not hit the mainstream and still don't have an advertising product that appeals to major advertisers. With every major player in digital media integrating location into preexisting products, Facebook, Google, and Twitter, "location" might yet again be relegated to enhancement of existing user habit, as opposed to developing a unique value proposition for advertisers. Almost all of these LBS apps are about sharing one's location in an egotistical fashion, or providing basic navigation, and location based recommendation engines are still little more than glorified affiliate engines. Tina will explore what brands and real people want, as opposed to what developers can create. For now, advertisers are still asking, "are we there yet?" as the mobile media industry continues to struggle to locate media buyers.
